IVF :

IVF is the most commonly used Assisted Reproductive treatment. IVF literally means allowing fertilization of the male and female gametes (sperm and egg) to occur outside the human body. IVF is an established and the most commonly used treatment for many forms of infertility where an egg or eggs are extracted from the ovary or ovaries of a woman and injected with the sperm in the laboratory to achieve fertilization. After normal fertilization is achieved, the fertilized eggs are cultured in the laboratory for a defined period before they are placed inside a woman’s uterus (womb) to achieve pregnancy.

A woman undergoing IVF will have her ovaries stimulated with Gonadotropin subcutaneous injections (GNT’s) to produce a sufficient amount of eggs. She will be closely monitored through her cycle with ultrasound to determine the optimal time for retrieving her eggs. When the eggs are mature, an injection called “Ovidrel” (or HCG) is given which initiates the process of ovulation. After 35 hours, eggs will be retrieved through needle aspiration in the operating room located in our clinic. Her partner will provide a sperm sample which will be used to fertilize her eggs immediately followed by retrieval.

IVF is used in the following patients:

  • Blocked or damaged fallopian tubes.
  • Male factor infertility including decreased sperm count or sperm motility.
  • Women with ovulation disorders, premature ovarian failure, uterine fibroids
  • Women who have had their fallopian tubes removed.
  • Unexplained infertility.
  • Failed IUI treatment.
  • Ovulation failure with all possible conventional methods

The success of IVF :

The success of IVF depends on a number of factors including:

  • Reproductive history.
  • Maternal age.
  • Cause of infertility.
  • Lifestyle factors.
